Photoshop 5.5 History Brush

When using the history brush. I apply a filter to 4x6 photograph, then use the history brush to bring back some of the original. However, after I save the picture and reopen the file, I cannot continue using the history brush. Is there a certain way that the file has to be saved so I don't have to finish my job with the history brush before saving? Also, don't laugh at the fact I'm using 5.5, money is tight in schools.
